About this position

Postdoc opportunity at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg, Germany within the newly established Phase Transition Engineering group led by Dr. Leif-Thore Deck.

The project is centered on optics, microfluidics, phase transitions, crystallization, precipitation, and the study of biomolecular condensates and aggregates. The successful candidate will develop next-generation optical platforms for high-throughput studies of phase transitions in peptides, proteins, and nucleic acids, with applications in biopharmaceutical formulation and disease-relevant protein aggregation.

Key tasks include building a customized fluorescence microscope for combinatorial droplet microfluidics, adding quantitative phase imaging and other microscopic tools for online monitoring, and developing software/image analysis tools to support these technologies.

Applicants should hold a PhD in optics and/or microfluidics, preferably in chemical engineering, bioengineering, process engineering, physics, chemistry, or a related field, with above-average grades. Strong communication skills, teamwork, very good English, and sufficient German are required; experience in chemical laboratory work, hardware development, and image analysis is an advantage.

This is a full-time, two-year fixed-term position in the public sector, with the option of extension. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis until the position is filled. Apply through the institute’s online portal with a motivation letter, CV, certificates, and reference letters.
