About this position
Postdoctoral position at the University of Amsterdam in the project The Sound of Disagreement: Embodied Histories of Political Speech 1800-present.
The postdoc will study political speech, representation, and the history of disagreement in late czarist and early Soviet Russia (ca. 1870–1930), with particular attention to how minoritized, gendered, or ethnicized groups gained political audibility in small-scale debating contexts.
You will design and develop your own case study, work with archival material, and contribute to an interdisciplinary team researching the sonic practices of political debate in Europe. The role includes independent research as well as collaboration with colleagues through publications, workshops, expert meetings, a symposium, and public dissemination.
Eligibility highlights: PhD in a relevant field, excellent English, strong Russian, archival research skills, and a cooperative mindset. Knowledge of a language spoken by a minoritized ethnic community within the Russian Federation is an advantage.
Funding and conditions: This is a paid postdoctoral employment position. The contract is for one year and may be extended by two years after positive evaluation. Salary is €4,728–€6,433 per month (full-time, 38 hours/week), plus holiday allowance, year-end bonus, pension, and other benefits.
Deadline: 30 August 2026.
How to apply: Send one single PDF containing a motivation letter, CV, writing sample (5,000–10,000 words), and the names/contact details of two referees including your thesis advisor.
