About this position

HIPOLE Jena (Helmholtz Institute for Polymers in Energy Applications Jena) is recruiting a Postdoc (m/f/d) in polymer and colloid characterization for its location in Jena, Germany. The position sits at the interface of polymer chemistry, polymer physics, materials science, and energy storage, with a strong focus on supporting battery research and the development of sustainable energy technologies.

The research theme is centered on conceptual and experimental approaches to characterize polymeric materials as a bridge between material synthesis and energy applications. Planned work includes structural investigation of polymeric materials using hydrodynamic methods, development of new characterization methods, use of analytical ultracentrifugation, fractionation, and light scattering, and establishment of synchrotron-based characterization of polymeric and colloidal systems in collaboration with scientists and engineers at HZB.

Responsibilities include characterization of novel materials for energy storage systems such as redox flow batteries, building expertise in energy research, assisting with supervision of Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD theses, developing solution-based characterization methods, and presenting/publishing results in English. The institute also highlights opportunities for academic profile development in an interdisciplinary and international environment.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a Master’s degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, or a related field, and a PhD in macromolecular chemistry, physical chemistry of polymers, engineering, or a related field. Strong understanding of physical principles, basic analytical skills, good computer skills, and an affinity for programming/advanced software are desirable. Very good English, a strong publication record, and ideally experience in securing external funding are expected.

The contract is limited to 24 months, with the possibility of extension and even a permanent position. Compensation follows the TVöD-Bund public-sector agreement. Benefits include flexible and hybrid working, 30 days of paid leave, health management, pension coverage, and a subsidy for the Deutschlandticket/Jobticket.

Application deadline: 2026-09-30. Applications must be submitted through the online application management system only; email or postal applications will not be considered.
