About this position

Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, invites applications for a postdoctoral position focused on developing resilient energy frameworks for modern power systems. The Division of Electric Power Engineering is renowned for its interdisciplinary research in electric power technology, spanning electric power systems, power electronics, electric machines, and high-voltage engineering. The division collaborates with leading industrial partners, including Hitachi Energy Research, and hosts two centres of excellence: the Swedish Electromobility Centre and the Swedish Electricity Storage and Balancing Centre.

This postdoctoral project aims to address the critical challenge of maintaining stability in converter-dominated power networks. The selected candidate will contribute to pioneering research that integrates conventional and converter-based energy resources, enhancing grid reliability, stability, and resilience under evolving energy system conditions. Key objectives include identifying and quantifying essential grid services required during major disturbances, and developing methodologies for optimal allocation of these services based on resource characteristics and operating conditions. The research will focus on improving system dynamics across time scales from milliseconds to those relevant for secondary frequency control.

Experimental validation will be conducted using Chalmers’ advanced laboratory infrastructure, which includes a battery energy storage system, a wind turbine, and an integrated energy management platform. The project offers extensive hands-on experience with advanced energy technologies and opportunities to disseminate results through international conferences and peer-reviewed journals.

Applicants must hold a PhD degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline in electrical engineering, engineering physics, systems control, or a closely related field, with emphasis on power systems and power electronics. Strong collaborative skills, independent work capability, and excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are required. Experience in laboratory work is considered meritorious. Exceptions to the three-year eligibility limit may be made for documented circumstances such as parental leave, sick leave, or military service. Physical presence in Gothenburg is required throughout the employment, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.

The position is a full-time, two-year contract with approximately 10% departmental duties, including laboratory assistance and exercise leadership in relevant courses. Chalmers offers a dynamic and inspiring working environment, full employee benefits, and support for settling in Sweden, including Swedish language courses. The university is committed to gender balance and equality, actively participating in initiatives such as the GENIE project.

To apply, prepare your application in English and attach all documents as PDF files (maximum 40 MB each). Submit a comprehensive CV, including a complete list of publications and details of previous teaching experience. Include a personal letter outlining your research background and future goals. Use the application form via the provided link. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. Contact details to references will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is 31 May, 2026.

For questions, contact Associate Professor Mebtu Beza ([email protected]) or Dr. Anant Narula ([email protected]), Division of Electric Power Engineering.

Chalmers University of Technology is a leading institution in technology and natural sciences, fostering scientific excellence and innovative solutions for a sustainable world. Founded in 1829, Chalmers continues to advance knowledge and technical solutions through global commitment and entrepreneurship.
