About this position
AAU Energy at Aalborg University is advertising a Postdoc in sodium-ion battery state estimation based at the university’s Aalborg campus, Denmark. The position is part of the research group Batteries in the section for Mechatronic Systems, and it focuses on applied battery research with strong relevance to energy systems and battery management.
The project centers on sodium-ion battery technology, including battery cell characterization, modelling from laboratory tests, and development of algorithms for estimating state of charge, state of health, and power capability. The work also includes robustness studies under different operating conditions, testing of prototype battery modules, and comparison of sodium-ion batteries with traditional lithium-ion batteries in the context of state estimation and management.
The postdoc will contribute to scientific publications, conference presentations, and collaboration with colleagues and external partners in Denmark and abroad. The role may also involve limited teaching and supervision of bachelor’s and master’s students, and possibly support for external research funding applications and new research directions.
Required background includes a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Electrochemistry, or a closely related field, or equivalent qualifications at PhD level. Applicants should have experience with battery equivalent circuit models, Kalman filtering or other model-based methods, data-driven methods such as machine learning or neural networks, Matlab/Simulink, laboratory battery testing, cyclers, EIS, and battery data analysis. English proficiency is required; Danish is an advantage. The appointment is for 20 months starting 1 November 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Strong skills in Matlab/Simulink, laboratory experimentation, battery cyclers, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), battery test setup preparation, and battery data processing/analysis are required. Experience with industrial collaboration and battery management systems is an advantage, as is a documented ability to publish in international journals. Strong English communication skills are required; Danish is an asset but not mandatory.
