About this position

Leiden University is advertising a full-time postdoctoral position at the Leiden Institute of Physics (LION), in close collaboration with the Leiden Institute of Chemistry. The project focuses on fabricating graphene edge sensors for single-molecule detection and biopolymer sequencing, combining nanofabrication, nanoscience, low-current device electronics, 2D materials, chemistry, and microfluidics.

The successful candidate will join a small, highly collaborative team working alongside PhD students and professional staff. Research tasks include designing and optimizing graphene edge-to-edge tunneling device structures, developing electronic signal detection, and designing/testing microfluidic structures integrated with the tunneling device. The role also includes taking the lead in publishing scientific papers and potentially patent applications. A small contribution to teaching is optional, and supervision of BSc, MSc, and PhD projects related to the research program is part of the job.

The position is based at Leiden University in Leiden, The Netherlands, within a dynamic international research environment in the Faculty of Science and the Bio Science Park. The university highlights state-of-the-art preparation and measurement facilities, low-vibration lab space, and access to excellent mechanical and electronic workshops. The group has strong national and international collaborations and a translational outlook toward industry and societal impact.

Applicants should hold a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics, Nanoscience or Nanotechnology, or Electrical Engineering, and should have documented expertise in one or more of the relevant experimental fields, evidenced by several publications. Experience with tunneling devices, especially in liquid, is an asset. Strong independence, time management, motivation for fundamental research with application potential, teamwork, and excellent English communication skills are emphasized.

The appointment is for up to 2 years, initially for one year and extendable after positive evaluation. The salary ranges from €3,546 to €5,538 gross per month (scale 10), with 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, training and career development, commuting reimbursement, and a possible tax break for international hires. The deadline for applications is 15 September 2026.

To apply, submit the application online in English with a cover letter, CV, a short proposal for a new research line within the project, transcripts, PhD thesis, and the contact details of two references. For more information, contact Jan van Ruitenbeek at [email protected].

What's required

Applicants should hold a PhD degree in Condensed Matter Physics, Nanoscience or Nanotechnology, or Electrical Engineering. Required experience includes documented expertise in nanofabrication, nanoscience, low-current device electronics, or 2D materials (graphene) devices, supported by several scientific publications. Prior experimental experience and at least three first-author publications are expected. Experience with tunneling devices, especially in liquid, is an advantage. Candidates must be highly motivated for fundamental research with an application perspective, able to work independently and manage time and progress, have excellent written and spoken English, and show strong teamwork ability. Applicants should be willing to live in or relocate to the Netherlands, and may need to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification within two years if relevant.
