About this position
Postdoctoral position at Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel in the research area of social inequality in prehistoric societies, with a focus on both qualitative and quantitative approaches.
The position is embedded in the ROOTS project, specifically the subcluster ROOTS of Social Inequality. The successful candidate will help extend research from the first ROOTS phase by deepening the qualitative understanding of different forms of inequality and their socio-political context, while also carrying out quantitative analyses of how inequality developed across different regions and segments of society.
The role includes empirical investigation of the factors that promote or hinder the development of inequality, with the aim of better understanding the political, social, geographic, and material preconditions and consequences of social inequality over time. Collaboration with other ROOTS subclusters is expected, and the postdoctoral researcher will take an active part in addressing the project’s overarching research questions on the relationship between inequality and conflict escalation, the influence of settlement organisation and resource accessibility, and the ways in which social organisation, knowledge transmission, and technological change shape human impact on the environment.
This is a full-time, temporary postdoctoral appointment at the University of Kiel in Germany. The advert indicates an expected start within the ROOTS research environment, which includes collaboration with other postdocs and doctoral researchers. It is therefore well suited to a researcher with a strong background in archaeology/prehistory, social theory, and mixed qualitative-quantitative research methods.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a doctorate in Prehistory/Early History or Archaeology, strong publication output, solid grounding in anthropological, economic, and social theories/models, and familiarity with linguistic methodology or the willingness to acquire it. English at B2 level is required; German at B2 level is advantageous.
Application deadline: 4 September 2026, 23:59 (Europe/Berlin). Applications are submitted via the university’s online jobs portal.
