About this position

Duke University School of Medicine, Department of Population Health Sciences, is recruiting a Postdoctoral Associate for a data-intensive project focused on agent-based modeling, network science, infectious disease dynamics, uncertainty quantification, and large-scale simulation.

The successful candidate will work on a calibrated HIV epidemic simulation representing populations in the U.S. South. The project integrates dynamic social and sexual networks, heterogeneous susceptibility and infectiousness, treatment and prevention interventions, behavioral processes, and within-host differences in infectiousness to evaluate strategies for reducing HIV transmission.

Training and mentorship are provided under Dr. Dana Pasquale in a collaborative environment spanning epidemiology, computational modeling, network science, computational immunology, mathematical modeling, and HIV clinical care. The role is designed to support methodological growth, scientific leadership, first-author publications, and development of an independent research program.

Responsibilities include building scalable and reproducible simulation software, implementing dynamic network models, developing synthetic populations, performing model calibration and validation, conducting sensitivity analysis and uncertainty quantification, and preparing manuscripts and scientific presentations. Experience with R or Python, high-performance computing, and tools such as Git/GitHub and SLURM is highly desirable.

Eligibility: a PhD is required. Strong candidates will have recently completed or be near completion of a doctorate in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Computational Biology, Systems Science, Engineering, Physics, Epidemiology, Network Science, or a related quantitative field.

Funding: this is a full-time, 12-month appointment supported by project funding, with continuation dependent on future funding. Duke also highlights competitive employee benefits.
