About this position

University of Minnesota, Twin Cities is recruiting a Postdoctoral Associate for an interdisciplinary project on integrating ecosystem services into aquatic invasive species management.

The position sits at the intersection of environmental economics, spatial analysis, GIS, and social-ecological systems. The postdoc will lead ecosystem service identification, valuation, and spatial mapping for Minnesota waterbodies affected by aquatic invasive species, especially zebra mussels and starry stonewort. Work includes building an inventory and spatial database of ecosystem services, synthesizing spatial datasets, calculating zonal statistics, and translating ecological and economic information into index-based scores for lakes across Minnesota.

The role also includes stakeholder engagement: co-leading focus groups, expert elicitations, and workshops with AIS managers, Tribal natural resource departments, lakeshore property owners, and recreational users. The researcher will help incorporate community and Indigenous knowledge into service weighting metrics and collaborate with quantitative ecologists and software engineers to integrate results into the AIS Explorer decision-support tool.

Eligibility highlights: Ph.D. in Applied Economics, Environmental/Agricultural Economics, Ecological Economics, Natural Resource Management, or a closely related field by the start date. Strong experience with ecosystem service valuation frameworks, GIS/spatial programming in R or Python, and qualitative or mixed-methods research is expected. Excellent academic writing and communication skills are required.

Funding: 12-month appointment at 75% FTE with salary of $62,902/year ($47,177 for 0.75 FTE), plus benefits.

How to apply: Submit the application online via the University of Minnesota job portal and upload a cover letter and resume. Additional documents may be added later through the applicant portal.
