About this position
Stony Brook University’s Department of Geosciences is advertising a Postdoctoral Associate position in the United States (Stony Brook, New York). The project focuses on the melting behavior and physical properties of geological materials under conditions relevant to planetary interiors, combining density functional theory, molecular dynamics, and machine-learning interatomic potentials.
The successful candidate will generate DFT reference data, train and validate ML force fields, run large-scale atomistic simulations, analyze results, and interpret them geophysically. The role also includes writing peer-reviewed papers, presenting at conferences and group meetings, and participating in group activities such as mentoring students.
Required background: a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in geosciences, geophysics, physics, chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a closely related field by the appointment date; experience with DFT/electronic structure calculations, molecular dynamics, ML interatomic potentials (e.g., MACE, NequIP, DeePMD), and Linux-based HPC workflows; and at least one peer-reviewed publication.
Preferred experience: free-energy or phase-boundary calculations, high-pressure/high-temperature geological materials, transport-property analysis from MD trajectories, GPU-accelerated ML tools, LAMMPS/ASE, active learning or uncertainty-driven sampling, conference presentations, national-facility allocation requests, and reproducible research practices.
Funding: full-time postdoctoral appointment with salary of $58,000-$68,000 plus $4,000 location pay annually.
Application: apply online via the Stony Brook University careers portal and upload a CV/resume and cover letter. Posting dates shown are Sep 15, 2026 to Sep 28, 2026.

What's required
Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in geosciences, geophysics, physics, chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a closely related field must be in hand by the date of appointment. Required experience includes first-principles electronic structure or density functional theory calculations using an established code such as VASP or Quantum ESPRESSO, molecular dynamics simulations, training/fine-tuning/validating machine-learning interatomic potentials or force fields such as MACE, NequIP, or DeePMD, and running scientific calculations on Linux-based high-performance computing clusters with scripting or workflow automation such as Python or bash. At least one peer-reviewed publication is required. Preferred experience includes free-energy or phase-boundary calculations, geological materials at high pressure and high temperature, extracting transport properties from molecular dynamics trajectories, GPU-accelerated machine learning frameworks, LAMMPS or ASE, dataset curation and active learning, conference presentations, computing allocation requests, and reproducible research practices with Git.
How to apply
Submit the online application through the Stony Brook University careers portal. Include a resume/CV and cover letter with the application.
