About this position

The MBEAM Lab in the Aerospace Mechanics Research Center at the University of Colorado Boulder is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate for experimental research on gas-surface interactions, molecular beam-surface scattering, and aerospace materials relevant to hypersonic flows and spacecraft interactions in the low Earth orbit environment.

The position involves hands-on laboratory work with hyperthermal beam exposures, molecular beam sampling mass spectrometry, surface analysis (SEM, AFM, XPS), vacuum hardware, lasers, and data analysis. Projects may include reactive and inelastic scattering of O, N, O2, N2, or Ar on materials used for satellites or heat shields, plus studies of ablation phenomena. The lab collaborates with theoreticians/modelers and other experimentalists.

Eligibility highlights: Ph.D. in chemistry, physics, or engineering; strong lab hardware skills; CAD competence; programming ability; good writing, presentation, and organization skills; ability to work independently and mentor others. Preferred experience includes molecular beam experiments, high/ultrahigh vacuum systems, mass spectrometry, lasers/laser spectroscopy, molecular reaction dynamics, spacecraft materials (especially polymers), and compressible fluid dynamics. U.S. citizenship is required because the appointment cannot sponsor H-1B or J-1 visas.

Funding: starting salary is $75,000-$85,000 per year, with benefits including medical, dental, retirement, paid time off, tuition assistance, and transit access.

Application deadline: apply by 2026-09-03 for full consideration. Submit a cover letter and CV through CU Boulder Jobs; do not email materials. Two references will be requested later in the process.
