About this position

Postdoctoral Associate in Rare Disease Mechanisms and Drug Discovery at the Broad Institute (Cambridge, MA, United States).

The Neal Laboratory within the Broad Institute’s Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Genomic Mechanisms of Disease is recruiting an independent, creative postdoctoral researcher to study how genetic variants drive rare disease and how those insights can be translated into potential treatments. This position is part of Project Encore, an NIH Director’s Transformative Research Award-funded initiative focused on pooled optical screening, compound screening, and mechanistic discovery.

The project combines barcoded ORF expression libraries, multiplexed fluorescence imaging, in situ barcode sequencing, and high-throughput screening to test thousands of compounds across more than 1.6 million compound-variant combinations. The work is highly experimental and technology-driven, with opportunities to develop screening platforms, analyze high-dimensional cellular phenotypes, and pursue mechanistic biology in disease-relevant models.

Research interests include rare disease mechanisms, functional genomics, cell biology, human genetics, drug discovery, optical profiling, and quantitative imaging. The lab emphasizes scientific independence, collaboration with computational biologists and disease-area experts, and career development toward future leadership roles in academia or industry.

Eligibility highlights: Ph.D. required in molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, functional genomics, bioengineering, chemical biology, systems biology, or a related field. Strong mammalian cell culture, molecular biology, and fluorescence microscopy experience are required. Preferred experience includes rare disease or mechanistic cell biology, genetic perturbation screens, barcoded libraries, lentiviral transduction, cell line engineering, high-content microscopy, compound screening, multiplexed immunostaining, in situ sequencing, iPSC-derived or primary cells, and image analysis/programming in CellProfiler, Fiji, Python, or R.

Funding: Full-time paid postdoctoral role with a listed salary range of $70,000 to $92,666.67 per year, plus Broad Institute benefits. The post also notes encouragement and support for applying for external fellowships.

Application window: Rolling review until the position is filled. Start date is flexible and as early as possible.
