About this position
Exciting postdoctoral opening in biological oceanography at the Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromsø, Norway. The project focuses on ice–ocean interactions, Antarctic ecosystem dynamics, and biogeochemical cycles in the Southern Ocean, with particular attention to marine microbial communities, phytoplankton, nutrients, and the carbon cycle in the King Haakon VII Sea off Dronning Maud Land.
The position is part of the Research Council of Norway-funded iC3 – Center for Ice, Cryosphere, Carbon and Climate and contributes to the international initiative Antarctic InSync. The successful candidate will analyze biological and biogeochemical oceanographic observations, combine new measurements with existing datasets, and help publish findings in peer-reviewed journals. The role also includes archiving and documenting processed datasets and collaborating in a multidisciplinary Antarctic research program.
Eligibility highlights: a completed PhD in biological oceanography or a related field, documented publication experience, strong English skills, and willingness to learn Norwegian if needed. Desirable experience includes polar ecosystems, sea ice biology, satellite datasets, time series analysis, Matlab or similar tools, and expedition work in polar environments. A seafarer's medical certificate is required for research cruises, and security authorization may be needed.
Funding and terms: fixed-term appointment for 4 years, salary under Norwegian State salary code 1352, expedition allowance, pension membership, and paid Norwegian courses if passed.
