About this position
The Laboratory of Early Experience and Development (LEED) at the University of Houston is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for a newly funded NICHD R01 project led by Dr. Johanna Bick. The project asks whether a scalable parenting intervention can improve early brain development and socioemotional functioning in infants born preterm.
This is a longitudinal randomized controlled trial (RCT) combining infant MRI, EEG, autonomic physiology, and behavioral assessments across the first two years of life. The study focuses on how supportive caregiving shapes neural systems involved in social development, emotion regulation, resilience, and mental health after preterm birth.
The fellow will help oversee day-to-day implementation of the trial, manage multimodal infant data collection, process and analyze MRI and EEG data, develop reproducible analysis pipelines, and contribute to first-author and collaborative manuscripts. The role also includes presenting at conferences, mentoring trainees, and contributing to grant development and future NIH proposals.
Required background includes a Ph.D. in Psychology, Neuroscience, Cognitive Science, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, plus experience with neuroimaging analysis, programming, and strong quantitative skills. Preferred experience includes infant/pediatric neuroimaging, MRI/EEG software, Linux, Docker, Git, HPC/cloud workflows, and longitudinal modeling.
The position is grant funded, with an initial one-year appointment and possible renewal depending on performance and continued funding. Salary and benefits follow NIH postdoctoral guidelines and University of Houston policies.

What's required
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Psychology, Neuroscience, Cognitive Science, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. Required experience includes neuroimaging data analysis (MRI, EEG, or related modalities), programming in Python, R, MATLAB, Bash, or similar, strong quantitative skills such as longitudinal data analysis, mixed-effects modeling, or machine learning, excellent scientific writing and communication, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team. Preferred experience includes Linux, infant or pediatric neuroimaging, structural/diffusion/resting-state MRI, infant EEG collection and analysis, MRI software such as FSL, FreeSurfer, MRtrix, AFNI, Connectome Workbench, Docker, Git, HPC/cloud workflows, mentoring, and research coordination.
