About this position
Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental Humanities at the University of Stavanger, Faculty of Education and Humanities, Department of Cultural Studies and Languages, Norway.
This full-time postdoctoral position is offered for 36 months starting from 1 January 2027. The appointment includes 30 months of project work and 6 months of administrative duties and/or teaching in the department and at the Greenhouse Center for Environmental Humanities.
The project focuses on developing and leading the Greenhouse Games Lab, an initiative aimed at building an internationally recognized environment for research, development, education, and innovation in environmentally themed board games. The successful candidate will help establish procedures for creating and publishing peer-reviewed, quality-assured board games, and will be expected to publish at least two articles on board games and the environment, including one review article for the wider research community.
The postdoctoral fellow will also prepare funding applications for research, development, and innovation, including opportunities from the Research Council of Norway and the EU, and will work in collaboration with societal partners and researchers at the Greenhouse. Another key task is to help build a European network of game scholars, developers, institutions, and publishers, with the goal of organizing an annual workshop at the Greenhouse.
The position sits within a strong interdisciplinary research environment that draws on history, literature, media, religion, philosophy, and the arts to study relationships between people, nature, and the environment. Candidates should combine expertise in the environmental humanities or related fields with experience in game development, and should be motivated by research impact, innovation, and collaboration across disciplines.
Eligibility highlights: a relevant PhD degree (thesis submitted by the deadline and approved before appointment), good oral and written English, and the ability to work full-time on the project. The announcement also emphasizes research quality, academic integrity, international experience, collaborative ability, innovative thinking, and the capacity to deliver results within the employment period.
Funding and benefits: the postdoctoral role is salaried according to the Norwegian State Salary Scale (code 1352), with gross annual pay of NOK 590,000 to NOK 680,000 and possible higher pay in special cases.
