About this position

Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), Faculty of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Food Science (KBM), is advertising a 3-year postdoctoral position in microbial nitrogen metabolism. The position is linked to the ERC project NOD-AOL: Nitric oxide-driven anaerobic oxidation of lignocellulose, which investigates how plant material decomposition connects to denitrification in soil and freshwater sediments.

The successful candidate will join the Protein Engineering and Proteomics (PEP) research group and work on environmental microbiology, bacterial genetics, enzyme biochemistry, proteomics, and bioinformatics. Main tasks include characterizing bacteria carrying nod genes, performing genetic manipulations and knockouts, cloning/expression/purification of membrane-bound enzymes, biochemical characterization of potential NO dismutases, scale-up of enzyme production in bioreactors, and proteomics analyses. The role also includes writing scientific publications and co-supervising master's students and fellows.

Applicants must hold a doctorate in a relevant field (or an approved equivalent foreign doctorate). Required experience includes environmental microbiology, cloning and purification of proteins, enzymology, and cultivation/transformation of bacteria. Strong written and spoken Norwegian and English are required, and the postdoctoral fellow must be able to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language. Desired experience includes membrane proteins, proteomics-related bioinformatics, redox enzymology, lignocellulose breakdown, and denitrification gas analysis.

The position is based at NMBU in Ås, Norway. Salary is listed at NOK 604,900–796,600 depending on qualifications. Application deadline: 9 September 2026. Apply electronically via Jobbnorge and include a cover letter, CV, relevant certificates, and up to 10 scientific works. If needed, non-electronic documents must be sent by post to NMBU KBM, marked 26/09369.
