About this position

The Department of Political Science at the University of Gothenburg is inviting applications for a postdoctoral fellow in Political Science within the ERC Advanced Grant project Dying Occupations and Political Change (OCCPOL), led by Professor Johannes Lindvall.

The project studies how the decline and disappearance of occupations shape political participation, political opinions, and party choices in democracies. The postdoc will contribute to a major comparative data resource covering occupational change in Germany, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States, using historical censuses, labor-force surveys, official registers, and other sources. The work involves data construction, data harmonization, classification, record linkage, validation, documentation, and computational analysis.

This is a research-focused position with substantial intellectual autonomy. The fellow will conduct original research within the OCCPOL framework, collaborate with the project team, and help shape the project’s methodological and conceptual development. Relevant skills include quantitative methods, R or Python, reproducible workflows, machine learning, automated text analysis, and experience with historical or register data.

Eligibility requires a doctoral degree in political science or a closely related field by the appointment decision date. Applicants should have excellent English and strong organizational, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills. Experience with comparative research, occupational classifications, labor-market change, or project-country languages is considered an advantage.

The appointment is fixed-term for 24 months at 100% full time, with a possible 12-month extension after review. Salary is individually set. Applications must be submitted through the University of Gothenburg recruitment portal by 2026-11-19.

Required application materials include a cover letter describing how your research agenda fits the project, a CV with publications, an article-length writing sample, and at least three references.
