About this position
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), Atmospheric Processes, Emissions, and Composition Section, is advertising multiple post-doctoral fellowship positions in atmospheric chemistry and aerosol science in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
The research focuses on quantifying gas- and particle-phase organic carbon from wildfires and the oil and gas sector, including the evolution of organic carbon through oxidized products and secondary organic aerosol (SOA), as well as other semi- and intermediate-volatility organics (S/IVOCs). Projects include developing new methods for quantifying intermediate and semi-volatile organics, wildfire PM speciation, airborne measurements of trace gases, and studying relationships between particulate matter composition and health/environmental impacts.
Work will be based mainly on a focused airborne wildfire campaign and/or ground-based studies in oil and gas regions. Relevant tools and techniques include HR-ToF-AMS, HR-ToF-CIMS, HR-ToF-PTR-MS, SMPS, GC-EI-ToF-MS, off-line GC-MS, thermal desorption TD-GC-MS, and LC-ToF-MS.
Applicants should hold a PhD in chemistry, atmospheric sciences, environmental engineering, or a related field, obtained within the past 5 years. Experience with field or laboratory measurement projects is important, and strong candidates will have skills in chromatography, ambient air sampling, advanced mass spectrometry, programming, and complex data analysis. The post requires travel within Canada for field work up to 6–8 weeks per year and on-site work at Downsview Laboratories in Toronto at least 4 days per week.
The appointment is for 1 year with possible renewal for up to 2 additional years by mutual agreement. Priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
