About this position

Postdoctoral position at the University of Vienna / Max Perutz Labs in the Falk Lab on the assembly and regulation of the C. elegans small RNA amplification machinery.

The project focuses on how C. elegans amplifies small RNAs to regulate gene expression and protect the genome. The work combines biochemistry, biophysics, and worm genetics, with an emphasis on bridging in vitro reconstitution and C. elegans genetics to understand how the machinery functions in the animal and in vitro.

This is a postdoctoral opening for 3 years with the option of extension. The position is based in Vienna, Austria. The advertised salary is EUR 5,079.50 gross (14 times per year), with possible adjustment for relevant professional experience.

Required background includes a PhD completed or near completion in biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, or a related field. Strong hands-on experience is expected in recombinant protein production and purification, biophysical characterization methods such as SEC-MALS, mass photometry, ITC, MST, or fluorescence anisotropy, and enzymatic activity assay development. Applicants should have good written and spoken English, clear communication, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Helpful additional experience includes working with C. elegans (transgenics, cytology, phenotyping), structural biology, cryo-EM or crystallography, microscopy, and computational image analysis.

To apply, submit a scientific CV/letter of intent, publication list, a one-page summary of research interests, doctoral degree, and contact details for reference letters through the University of Vienna job portal. Application deadline: 18 October 2026.

What's required

PhD completed or near completion in biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, or a related field. Extensive experience with recombinant protein production and purification, biophysical methods to assess oligomeric state/ligand binding/mono- or polydispersity (e.g. SEC-MALS, mass photometry, ITC, MST, fluorescence anisotropy), and establishing enzymatic activity assays. Good written and spoken English, clear communication, ability to work independently and in a team, and ability to drive a project. Advantageous: experience with C. elegans (including transgenics, cytology, phenotypic assessment), structural biology, cryo-EM or crystallography, microscopy, and computational image analysis.
