About this position
ETH Zurich’s Atmospheric Chemistry group at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science (IAC) is inviting applications for a 4-year PhD position in atmospheric chemistry on “Investigating oxidized nitrogen in the troposphere”.
The project focuses on the cycling of NOx and other forms of oxidized nitrogen in the troposphere, with implications for air quality and climate. The research will use global modeling tools such as GEOS-Chem and CESM, together with analysis of large observational datasets from airborne, surface, and satellite measurements. The successful candidate will work on improving representation of these processes in a global 3D model and evaluating simulations against observations over time.
The position is supervised by Prof. Colette Heald at ETH Zurich. The group works on tropospheric composition, gases and particles, and global change, and offers a supportive, international environment with English as the working language. The student will also gain experience in scientific communication, paper writing, and supervision through co-supervising bachelor’s and master’s theses.
Eligibility highlights: an MSc degree in atmospheric science, earth science, environmental science, chemistry, physics, or a related field is required before the start date; prior experience in atmospheric chemistry is expected; regional or global modeling experience is desirable; strong programming skills are necessary; and good English skills are essential.
Funding: the PhD is funded for 4 years under standard ETH regulations.
Application: apply online only via ETH Zurich’s portal. Prepare a CV, a one-page summary of your master’s thesis, copies of certificates and transcript if currently enrolled in an MSc program, and contact details for 2–3 references. Applications are reviewed from 15 November 2026 until the position is filled.
