About this position

Stanford University is advertising an open postdoctoral position in the Boies Group, led by Adam Boies, in Mechanical Engineering. The project focuses on methane pyrolysis, hydrogen production, and carbon nanotube (CNT) synthesis, with an emphasis on high-temperature conversion of methane and natural gas into CNTs, graphitic carbons, and hydrogen.

The successful candidate will work on experimental research involving high-enthalpy reacting-flow systems, floating-catalyst chemical vapor deposition, reactor development, chemical kinetics, reacting-flow diagnostics, and carbon nanomaterial synthesis. The role is highly collaborative and includes interaction with industrial sponsors, academic collaborators, technical staff, and PhD students.

Research themes: methane pyrolysis, hydrocarbon decomposition, CNT growth, aerosol science, gas-phase nanoparticle production, reacting flows, transport phenomena, chemical-kinetic modeling, and advanced diagnostics. The postdoc will help design, commission, operate, and optimize reactors; develop in-situ and extractive diagnostics; establish mass/carbon/energy balances; and connect reactor conditions to CNT morphology, purity, yield, and bulk-material performance.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a PhD in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, applied physics, or a closely related field. Strong hands-on experience with high-temperature reacting systems, diagnostics, modeling, and safe operation of complex experimental setups is required. Experience with Cantera/Chemkin, optical diagnostics, CNT characterization, aerosol dynamics, and industrial collaboration is desirable.

Funding and terms: the appointment is expected to last 18 months with possible extension depending on performance and funding. The expected base pay range is $85k–$115k.
