About this position

Washington University in St. Louis (WashU Medicine) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics for the Ghanbarpour Laboratory.

The lab studies how bacteria and human mitochondria maintain homeostasis and respond to stress, with a strong focus on ATP-dependent AAA proteolytic machines, membrane-spanning and soluble proteases, and their accessory factors. Research topics include substrate specificity, complex assembly, bacterial recovery from antibiotic stress, environmental adaptation, pathogen attack, bacteriophage defense, innate immune strategies, and protein engineering for new molecular tools.

Methods and training include cryo-EM, cryo-ET, biochemical and cellular assays, heterogeneity analysis, membrane biology, and mass spectrometry. Experience in cryo-EM/cryo-ET is highly desirable; background in biochemistry, genetic microbiology, or protein engineering is also valued.

The position is well suited for candidates pursuing an academic career. Postdoctoral researchers may dedicate up to 20% of their time to an independent project and may develop a faculty-level research proposal.
