About this position

Queen Mary University of London is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join Dr Lin Su's group on the S-LATTICE consortium project, an ARIA-funded collaboration led by the University of Edinburgh with partners across the UK and the United States.

The project engineers microbial S-layer proteins into large-area, defect-free, metal-coordinated 2D lattices for selective ion separation and catalysis. The role begins with protein-supply work: expressing, purifying, and refolding assembly-competent proteins, then mapping buffer, cation, and interface conditions that produce defect-free films. Later work shifts toward bio-inorganic chemistry and photocatalysis, including coupling photosensitisers, forming bimetallic Cu/Pd nanoclusters, and testing them in photocatalytic CO2 reduction and green carbon-coupling reactions.

You should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in biochemistry, chemical biology, bionanotechnology, or a related field. Strong experience in recombinant protein expression and purification in bacterial hosts is required, together with familiarity with standard biophysical characterisation of proteins and assemblies. The role suits someone who can contribute across both the early protein-assembly work and the later catalytic demonstrators.

The post is based at Queen Mary University of London in the United Kingdom, with a funded early-project placement in Professor Caroline Ajo-Franklin's laboratory at Rice University in Houston. It is a full-time fixed-term appointment for two years, extendable to the full 36 months subject to continued funding.
