About this position

Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) position in Microbiology at the University of Cambridge, working in the Reisner Laboratory under Prof Erwin Reisner in the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry.

The project is highly interdisciplinary and focuses on engineering live cells to convert carbon dioxide and other feedstock chemicals into bespoke complex chemicals. The cells will be interfaced with light-harvesting semiconductor systems to enable semi-artificial photosynthesis of organic chemicals. The work sits at the intersection of microbiology, biochemistry, chemical biology, synthetic biology, bioelectrochemistry, and biophotocatalysis.

Funding is provided by UKRI through a Japan-UK collaboration for artificial photosynthetic cell systems and by an ERC Advanced Grant on semi-biological domino catalysis. The post is fixed-term for 2 years in the first instance.

Applicants should have or be about to obtain a PhD in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, or a closely related discipline. Desirable experience includes synthetic biology, protein purification, or bioelectrochemistry. A strong publication track record and excellent academic performance are expected.

How to apply: submit the online application via the Cambridge recruitment system, including a CV, covering letter, and publications list. Quote reference MA50432. Closing date: 30 August 2026.
