About this position

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Chemical Process Engineering at the University of Cambridge, within the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry and the Reisner Laboratory.

This fixed-term PDRA role focuses on chemical process engineering, chemical reaction engineering, continuous-flow processing, and solar-driven photoreforming chemistry. The project aims to develop a large-scale process that upcycles plastic waste into fuels and valuable chemicals using solar energy and renewable electricity, with an emphasis on practical-scale reactor design, continuous-flow solar reactors, and commercial feasibility.

The successful candidate will work under Prof Erwin Reisner in a highly collaborative environment, alongside expertise in photocatalyst synthesis and related technologies. The work is expected to contribute to top-tier publications and novel intellectual property supporting commercialization.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have or be about to receive a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Strong experience in chemical reactor operations and reaction engineering is essential; experience in waste recycling, solar technologies, hydrogen technology, and/or continuous-flow processing is desirable. A strong publication record is also expected.

Funding: the post is funded for 2 years in the first instance by Prof Reisner's Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies. Salary information is listed on the vacancy page.

How to apply: submit the online application via the Cambridge recruitment system, uploading a CV, covering letter, and publications list. Quote reference MA50433. Closing date: 30 August 2026.
