The role is based in the Carbon Fiber Technology Facility (CFTF) and the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) within ORNL’s Manufacturing Sciences Division and Energy Sciences and Technology Directorate in Knoxville, Tennessee, United States.

The research focuses on composite materials, polymer chemistry, materials science, high-temperature pyrolysis, fiber-reinforced composites, lab-scale fabrication, testing, and scale-up from laboratory to commercial production. The postdoc will work with scientists across materials science, chemistry, data science, and robotics, and will interact with industry partners and universities.

Required background includes a PhD completed within the last five years in material science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, polymer chemistry, electrical engineering, robotics, or a related field; experience with composite material preparation; and hands-on lab-scale polymer synthesis and analysis. Preferred skills include FEA, data analytics, machine learning, digital twin knowledge, Python, additive manufacturing, thermodynamics, metallurgy, strong publication record, and excellent English communication.

The appointment is up to 24 months with possible extension, depending on performance and funding. ORNL notes competitive pay and benefits, plus relocation assistance and standard employee benefits.
