About this position

Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Arizona (Tucson, Arizona, United States) in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment.

The Babst Lab is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with expertise in ecosystem dynamics, dryland ecology, remote sensing, and vegetation/soil responses in anthropogenically altered landscapes. The project focuses on vegetation growth and functioning along environmental gradients in and beyond the U.S. Southwest, with a particular emphasis on mining-impacted land and tailings storage facilities.

The successful candidate will conduct collaborative research using field ecological methods, remote sensing, and laboratory-based approaches to assess long-lasting vegetation communities on and adjacent to mining-impacted sites. The role includes building predictive capacity for revegetation success or failure, conducting empirical and/or process-based modelling, participating in team meetings, supervising student research, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and contributing to grant proposals.

Supervision and collaboration are with Dr. Flurin Babst, in close collaboration with the Center for Environmentally Sustainable Mining led by Dr. Alicja Babst-Kostecka and the Arizona Remote Sensing Center led by Dr. Willem van Leeuwen.

Eligibility: Ph.D. in environmental science, ecology, geography, biochemistry, or a related field by the time of hire. Preferred experience includes multi-scale remote sensing, statistical or process-based modelling, and environmental research on mining-impacted land, plus a strong publication and project leadership record.

Funding and benefits: One-year appointment with possible extension depending on performance and funding. Salary follows NIH salary guidelines and depends on experience. Full benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance, paid vacation/sick leave/holidays, and tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members.
