About this position

Postdoctoral Research Fellow opportunity at the University of Missouri in the Center for Influenza and Emerging Infectious Diseases (CIEID), focused on the aerosol and airborne transmission biology of influenza viruses.

The position is part of major NIH-supported research, including a multidisciplinary P01 program within the NIAID Influenza Transmission Research Consortium (ITRC) and complementary NIH R01-supported work. The research program asks important questions about why infected hosts differ in the amount and infectivity of virus released into aerosols, why exposure leads to infection in some recipients but not others, and why influenza viruses vary in airborne transmissibility.

Research areas include aerosol science, aerosol biology, respiratory transmission, virology, immunology, engineering, computational fluid dynamics, and mathematical/mechanistic modeling. The fellow may design and conduct mechanistic studies using human studies and/or controlled animal models, study respiratory aerosol generation and transport, and integrate virologic, clinical, environmental, and transmission data.

The environment is highly interdisciplinary, with access to ABSL-2 transmission facilities, BSL-3 and ABSL-3 biocontainment facilities, aerosol sampling and engineering capabilities, laboratory automation, and institutional cores in genomics, imaging, proteomics, metabolomics, bioinformatics, and computational biology.

Eligibility: applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in aerosol science, aerosol biology, environmental or occupational health, engineering, microbiology, virology, infectious diseases, or a related field. Experience in aerosol science or airborne pathogen transmission is preferred; influenza experience is desirable but not required.

Funding: this is a postdoctoral research position with university benefits eligibility. The posting states the appointment is for at least one year with possible renewal based on performance and funding. No stipend amount is listed, and visa sponsorship is not available.

How to apply: complete the MU application and email a cover letter, CV, and contact information for at least two professional references to [email protected] for Dr. Henry Wan. Review begins immediately and continues until the position is filled.
