About this position
University College Dublin is advertising a Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 in the School of Agriculture and Food Science, focused on Animal and Crop Sciences.
The project is funded by HERDPATH, an ERC Starting Grant investigating how livestock and their pathogens have co-evolved over the last 10,000 years. The successful candidate will work on deep genomic analysis of livestock, principally sheep and goat, using data from archaeological remains across Eurasia and spanning the Neolithic to the present day.
Research tasks include reconstructing demographic history, detecting and dating signatures of selection, and characterising how host genetic variation has responded to pathogen pressure since domestication. The role also involves applying and developing population genetics methods suited to time-series and low-coverage ancient DNA, with relevance to breeding disease-resistant animals.
This is a temporary 24-month postdoctoral appointment with a salary range of €47,273–€47,880 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience. The post is intended for early-stage researchers, typically just after PhD completion or for someone entering a new area for the first time.
Applicants should note that UCD’s PD1 eligibility rules apply: if you have already completed PD1 at UCD, will soon complete a PD1, or your total postdoctoral experience would exceed 4 years including this post, you should not apply and should instead refer to PD2 posts.
Deadline: 8 September 2026 at 12:00 noon local Irish time. Apply via the vacancy page using the Apply button.
