About this position
UiT The Arctic University of Norway is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for the ERC Advanced Grant project RiverPulse: Reconfiguring human–nature interactions as an assemblage at the Arctic frontline of climate change. The position is based at the Department of Language and Culture, Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education, with the workplace in Tromsø, Norway.
The post focuses on environmental ethnography, river biographies, oral history, archival research, and qualitative analysis of how environmental change is negotiated, contested, remembered, and narrated over time in Arctic salmon river communities. The project works across river regions in Norway, Finland/Sweden, and Greenland, and combines humanities, social sciences, and environmental sciences to study climate-driven changes in river–salmon–human relations, knowledge, and governance.
The successful candidate will conduct ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and historical research in one RiverPulse river region, while contributing to comparative work across all three regions. The role includes work with ethnographic, narrative, oral-historical, and archival materials; analysis of community interpretations of changing river conditions; and collaboration with citizen science through piloting the RiverPulse app and interpreting observations with community members.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD in anthropology, human geography, sociology, discourse studies, critical sociolinguistics, environmental humanities, or a closely related field; strong qualitative research experience; excellent English; and working proficiency in at least one relevant field-community language (e.g. Norwegian, Kven, Northern Sámi, Finnish, Swedish, Meänkieli, Kalaallisut, or Danish). Experience with Indigenous or local knowledge, participatory methods, coloniality/decolonial approaches, oral history, archival research, or Arctic communities is an advantage.
Funding and terms: fixed-term appointment for 3 years; gross annual salary NOK 620,000–665,100 (100% position), plus membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. The position offers a collaborative interdisciplinary environment and support to develop independent analyses and publications within RiverPulse.
Application deadline: 15 November 2026. Apply through Jobbnorge and submit the required documents in English or a Scandinavian language.
