About this position

UiT The Arctic University of Norway is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for the ERC Advanced Grant project RiverPulse: Reconfiguring human–nature interactions as an assemblage at the Arctic frontline of climate change. The position is based at the Department of Language and Culture in Tromsø, Norway, and focuses on climate change, socio-ecological systems, Arctic salmon rivers, environmental change, adaptation, ecology, environmental science, environmental social science, and interdisciplinary research.

The project examines how accelerating climate change transforms Arctic salmon rivers as ecological systems, multispecies environments, lived places, and sites of governance. The postdoctoral fellow will contribute to comparative research across three river regions: Reisa in Norway, Tornio in Finland and Sweden, and Kapisillit in Greenland. The work combines ecological and quantitative evidence with ethnographic, historical, citizen-science, and governance approaches, with attention to Indigenous and minority communities including Sámi, Kalaallit, Kven, and Meänkieli contexts.

This specific position is designed for a researcher who can integrate ecological and social-science perspectives on climate-driven environmental change and emerging adaptation. The successful candidate will examine how climate-change impacts affect Arctic salmon socio-ecological systems and what forms of adaptation are emerging. The role includes fieldwork, interdisciplinary collaboration, analysis of interactions between ecological and social systems, and development of independent publications within the RiverPulse framework.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in sustainability science, climate science, ecology, environmental science, environmental social science, environmental anthropology, or a related field; research experience on climate change, environmental change, adaptation, or socio-ecological systems; qualitative and/or mixed-method environmental research experience; strong English skills; and preferably Norwegian or another Scandinavian language. Experience with Arctic or northern research, citizen science, and relevant field-site languages is desirable.

Funding and terms: fixed-term appointment for 3 years, full-time, with a gross annual salary of NOK 655,100 plus pension contributions. The position is part of a major ERC project and offers a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment and opportunities for career development.

Application deadline: 15 November 2026. Applications must be submitted through Jobbnorge and include a cover/application letter, a preliminary research plan (max 3 pages), CV, degree documentation, references, proof of English proficiency, a motivation letter, and up to five relevant scholarly works.
