About this position

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Climate and Environmental Governance at UiT The Arctic University of Norway (Tromsø, Norway) within the ERC Advanced Grant project RiverPulse.

The project studies how climate change is transforming Arctic salmon rivers as ecological systems, multispecies environments, lived places, and sites of governance. This postdoc will focus on climate and environmental governance, comparing existing and emerging governance arrangements across three river regions: Reisa (Norway), Tornio (Finland/Sweden), and Kapisillit (Greenland).

The role involves analysing how communities, institutions, and other actors govern and negotiate changing river relations in response to climate change and declining salmon populations. Relevant themes include Indigenous governance, co-management, rights of nature, environmental policy, participatory research, and the co-design of future governance practices. The project combines ecological and quantitative evidence with ethnographic, historical, citizen-science, and governance approaches.

Eligibility: a PhD in political science, governmental studies, environmental governance, environmental law, public policy, sustainability science, or a related field; demonstrated expertise in climate/environmental/natural-resource governance; experience with policy or institutional research; strong English. Experience with Arctic or northern research is an advantage but not required. Knowledge of field-site languages (Norwegian, Kven, Northern Sámi, Finnish, Swedish, Meänkieli, Kalaallisut, Danish) is preferred.

Funding and terms: fixed-term appointment for 3 years. Salary is NOK 620,000–665,100 gross per year (100% position), plus membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. The workplace is UiT in Tromsø, with some travel and fieldwork across the project sites.

How to apply: submit the application through Jobbnorge by 15 November 2026. Required documents include a CV, motivation letter, preliminary research plan (max 3 pages), up to five relevant publications, diplomas/transcripts, referee contacts, and English proficiency documentation if available. The research plan should explain your contribution to RiverPulse, methods, conceptual approach, collaboration opportunities, and any fieldwork or ethical considerations.
