About this position
Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Functional Biomaterials for Sustainable Agriculture at Charles Sturt University
This full-time, fixed-term postdoctoral opportunity is based at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia. The project sits within an ARC Mid-Career Industry Fellowship and focuses on transforming agricultural waste into low-cost, high-quality substrates and soil amendment products. The research aims to develop controlled-release biomaterials that improve nutrient release and water retention for mushroom cultivation and crop growth.
The role involves experimental research across materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, nanotechnology, agricultural science, agronomy, and soil science. Responsibilities include nanomaterials synthesis and characterisation, laboratory studies, plant and soil experiments, data analysis, research translation, publication writing, reporting, and project milestone delivery. The successful candidate will also support scale-up, commercialisation, and practical application of the research outcomes in collaboration with industry partners and a multidisciplinary team.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD in a relevant discipline; experience in agricultural-waste valorisation, substrate development, nutrient-release studies, or plant/soil experiments; strong quantitative analysis and reproducible research skills; and a strong publication and communication record. Experience with microscopy, spectroscopy, nutrient-release assays, nanomaterials, scale-up, or industry validation is highly regarded. The position is open to Australian Citizens and Permanent Residents, or applicants with a valid work visa.
Funding: Level A salary of $80,046 to $108,204 per annum plus 17% superannuation. The appointment is fixed term for up to 12 months.
