About this position
Stanford University School of Medicine is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in General Surgery with a strong interest in surgical education, surgical anatomy, and video production. The fellow will work under the mentorship of Brendan C. Visser, MD, Professor and Section Chief of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, and will collaborate with surgeons across the Department to transform operative footage, anatomy, technical expertise, and clinical decision-making into educational videos for trainees and practicing surgeons.
The core project is the advancement of the open-access Stanford HPB Surgery Video Library and the development of new video libraries in other specialties, with the long-term goal of building a comprehensive General Surgery video library. The role offers close collaboration with surgeons across specialties, opportunities to build an academic network, and the chance to present work at national and international meetings.
Primary responsibilities include video production and educational content development covering operative steps, surgical indications, anatomy, operative planning, technical decisions, perioperative care, instrumentation, and clinical concepts relevant to General Surgery. Depending on interests and productivity, the fellow may also participate in clinical or surgical education research, prepare peer-reviewed manuscripts, and present at scientific meetings.
Eligibility highlights include substantial clinical exposure to surgery, a strong grasp of surgical anatomy and operative principles, a serious interest in General Surgery or a related surgical field, initiative, professionalism, organization, attention to detail, the ability to work independently and collaborate across teams, and full professional proficiency in written and spoken English. American and international medical graduates, current General Surgery residents, and surgical residency graduates are encouraged to apply. Experience with Adobe Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve is valued but not required; illustration, animation, narration, or other educational media skills are also welcome.
This is a one-year postdoctoral appointment beginning as soon as January 2027 and no later than July 2027, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year based on performance and productivity. The position offers a competitive salary, full Stanford University benefits, and an expected base pay at the Stanford University required minimum for postdoctoral scholars (FY27 minimum $79,056).
To apply, submit your CV by email to [email protected]. For more information, contact Dohee Park, Administrative Associate to Brendan C. Visser, MD.
