About this position
University College London is advertising a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Mass Spectrometry within the UCL Mass Spectrometry Science Technology Platform (MS-STP) in London. The role sits in a highly collaborative environment supporting structural biology, proteomics, single-cell biology, and spatial biology research.
The project focuses on cyclic antimicrobial peptide–lipid interactions at molecular resolution. Working with Professor Alethea Tabor and Professor Kostas Thalassinos, the successful candidate will help develop and apply advanced structural mass spectrometry methods, especially XL-MS, to understand how cyclic antimicrobial peptides interact with target lipids and to support new antimicrobial strategies against multidrug-resistant bacteria.
The post involves leading structural mass spectrometry workflows alongside complementary biophysical techniques using model lipid bilayers, and contributing to computational models of peptide–lipid complexes. The work is embedded across both research groups and includes collaboration with a Research Fellow in Chemical Biology and a PhD student designing bespoke photoreactive peptides.
UCL’s MS-STP provides access to major instrumentation including Waters Select Series Cyclic IMS, Xevo G2-XS QTof with Acquity UPLC M-Class, Waters BioAccord, Orbitrap Eclipse Tribrid, Orbitrap Astral Zoom, CellenOne, and Syncell Microscoop platforms. The facility supports next-generation single-cell proteomics and subcellular proteomics.
Applicants should have a PhD or be close to completion in Mass Spectrometry, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or a related discipline, with experience in structural mass spectrometry and computational analysis. Experience with membrane proteins or peptides, biomolecular interactions in model membranes, and cross-linking mass spectrometry would be advantageous.
The appointment is fixed term for 2 years initially, with possible extension depending on funding and project needs. The advert lists a salary of £43,981 to £54,019.
To apply, use the job page’s Apply button and upload a CV, publication list, and covering letter describing your interest and fit for the role. The closing date is 16 October 2026.
