About this position
The University of Bergen’s Department of Mathematics is offering a three-year postdoctoral research fellow position in numerical fluid mechanics, funded by a European Research Council Starting Grant. The successful candidate will join Professor Dr.
Yan Li’s research group and contribute to the OceanCoupling project, which aims to develop novel numerical approaches for modeling multiscale flow systems in the upper ocean, including surface waves, subsurface currents, and turbulence. The research will focus on creating highly accurate and efficient computational models by integrating new theoretical frameworks and numerical methods, such as exponential integrators and Fast Fourier Transform/pseudospectral techniques.
The position involves analytical work, code development, and extensive numerical simulations, with access to high-performance computing facilities and experimental datasets for model validation. Candidates will be expected to implement new time integration approaches using programming languages like Fortran, Python, and MATLAB, and to validate and test these methods through simulations. The role offers opportunities to collaborate with experimental partners, supervise PhD students, and participate in international conferences and workshops.
Applicants must hold a PhD (or have submitted their thesis) in applied mathematics, computational fluid mechanics, physical oceanography, or related fields, and demonstrate top-level experience in numerical modeling and analysis. Additional advantages include experience with advanced numerical methods, model development in computational fluid dynamics, and proficiency in relevant programming languages. The position provides a competitive salary (NOK 657,000 per year), pension fund enrollment, and welfare benefits. The application process requires submission of a motivation letter, detailed qualifications, references, CV, certificates, transcripts, and a publication list via the Jobbnorge portal.
The University of Bergen values diversity and inclusivity, encouraging applications from all backgrounds. The anticipated start date is in the first quarter of 2026, and the application deadline is November 30, 2025.
Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
