About this position
University College Dublin is recruiting two Post-doctoral Research Fellows (Level 1) for the SYN-Bridge US–Ireland Partnership project, in collaboration with Queen’s University Belfast and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
The project focuses on bridge structural health monitoring and combines drive-by measurements from instrumented vehicles with stationary bridge sensors to assess bridge condition in real time. Research at UCD will cover damage-detection algorithms, moving-force identification, vehicle–bridge interaction, digital-twin modelling, Probability of Detection analysis, and value-of-information methods, moving from simulation to laboratory validation and field trials.
Applicants should hold a PhD in structural, civil or mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, statistics, or a related discipline. The post also asks for research experience in structural dynamics, structural health monitoring, or structural reliability, plus strong MATLAB or Python skills.
The positions are funded by Research Ireland, run for 30 months each, and offer a salary of €47,273. Start dates are 1 February 2027 and 1 May 2027. The closing date is 9 November 2026 at 12 noon Irish time.
