About this position
University of Cape Town is advertising a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship focused on climate change impacts on Africa’s surf conditions and surf economies. This opportunity sits within a wider Africa Climate Collaborative postdoc call and is supervised by Mark New, Marieke Norton, Emily Vosper (University of Bristol), and Chrisopher Trisos (UCT / University of Stellenbosch).
The project will map known and emerging surf breaks across Africa, assess how local communities depend on surf tourism, and model how changing wind, swell, and sea-level rise may affect surf break quality, consistency, and persistence. It also includes community-based fieldwork at up to eight surf tourism destinations to study climate risk perceptions, adaptation barriers, and opportunities for climate-resilient surf economies.
Academic areas: climate science, oceanography, physical geography, environmental science, geography, earth science, economics, statistics, and computational climate data analysis.
Required profile: a recently graduated PhD researcher with a PhD in climate science, oceanography, physical geography, or a related field; or another relevant PhD plus supporting undergraduate/Masters/work experience. Applicants should be able to analyse large multidimensional datasets, ideally climate datasets such as CMIP, reanalyses, and satellite products, and be committed to interdisciplinary research.
Desirable experience: gridded climate data access, Python or similar scientific scripting in Linux/Unix, climate libraries such as Xarray, Dask, NetCDF4, or Iris, econometrics, and socioeconomic data collection methods such as surveys, interviews, or focus groups.
Location: South Africa (University of Cape Town). Application: follow the linked postdoctoral fellowship page for full instructions and application details.
