About this position

Universitat Rovira i Virgili is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in the Department of Physical and Inorganic Chemistry (PI26032), based in Tarragona, Spain. This is a full-time, temporary research staff appointment associated with an ERC Starting Grant project, BIOPOLE (Reference 101222089, Horizon Europe - ERC). The role is centred on photochemistry and photocatalysis, with a strong emphasis on mechanistic studies of functionalized photocatalytic polymeric vesicles (polymersomes).

The successful candidate will work on understanding the mechanisms of photocatalytic reactions in both homogeneous solution systems and heterogenized soft polymeric bilayers / polymersomes. The project involves advanced spectroscopy and kinetic analysis, including transient absorption spectroscopy, time-resolved and steady-state absorption and emission spectroscopy, Stern-Volmer analyses, charge dynamics, and electron transfer kinetics. The researcher will help rationalize experimental trends in activity, selectivity, and stability and will contribute to data analysis, manuscript preparation, and competitive research proposals.

Eligibility and profile: a PhD in Chemistry, Photochemistry, Photocatalysis, or a closely related field is required. The posting highlights strong experience in photochemistry, mechanistic photocatalytic studies, organic and inorganic synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, Schlenk and glovebox techniques, and a strong publication record. English proficiency at B2 level or above is required. Experience with soft materials such as liposomes, polymersomes, and related vesicular systems is especially valued, as are independent laboratory skills, problem-solving ability, teamwork, mentoring, and scientific communication.

Work environment: the postdoctoral researcher will actively support the supervision and day-to-day mentoring of MSc and PhD students in the group, contributing to a collaborative research environment. The position is full-time (37.5 hours/week) and is scheduled to start on 1 November 2026. The application deadline is 21 September 2026, 23:59 (Europe/Madrid).

How to apply: submit your application through the official URV electronic recruitment page linked in the notice. Review the full call carefully for any required documents and formal submission instructions.

What's required

PhD in Chemistry, Photochemistry, Photocatalysis or a closely related field. Proven experience in photochemistry and mechanistic study of photocatalytic reactions, with a track record in organic and inorganic synthesis, spectroscopic techniques, Schlenk techniques and glovebox work. Demonstrated expertise in transient absorption spectroscopy, time-resolved and steady-state absorption and emission spectroscopy, Stern-Volmer analyses, charge dynamics, and electron transfer kinetics for homogeneous systems in solution. Experience with photochemistry of soft materials such as liposomes, polymersomes, and other vesicles is highly valuable. The candidate must be able to work independently, troubleshoot mechanistic and synthetic challenges, communicate fluently in English at minimum B2 level, show scientific productivity such as publications or submitted manuscripts, and be able to mentor MSc and PhD students. Interdisciplinary experience, paper writing, conference dissemination, and leadership skills are also valued.
