About this position

Argonne National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Researcher in AI for Earth System Sciences at its Decision and Infrastructure Science (DIS) Division in Lemont, Illinois, United States.

The project focuses on machine learning, deep learning, generative AI, high-performance computing (HPC), and earth system science, with applications to weather forecasting, hydrology, subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) prediction, atmospheric science, and urban digital twins. The successful candidate will help develop, benchmark, and deploy AI foundation models for infrastructure and resilience workflows, working with scientists in DIS, the Environmental Sciences Division, and Argonne leadership computing resources.

Applicants should have a recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD in geophysical sciences, computer science, or machine learning. Strong experience with PyTorch/JAX, distributed training on large GPU systems, transformers, GNNs, diffusion models, scientific coding, data analysis, and HPC visualization/analysis is expected. Background in atmospheric science, weather modeling, observational datasets, data assimilation, and numerical computation is especially valued.

This is a full-time postdoctoral appointment with an expected salary range of $72,879 to $121,465. The initial term is one year and may be extended to two years. Comprehensive benefits are included.
