About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher in Biodiversity Forecasting, Vegetation Dynamics and Rewilding at Aarhus University, Denmark.

This two-year postdoctoral position is part of the new Biodiversa+ REDESIGN project and is hosted by the Department of Biology, within the Section for Ecoinformatics and Biodiversity (ECOINF) and the ECONOVO research center. The project focuses on biodiversity forecasting, vegetation dynamics, rewilding, macroecology, ecological modelling, global-change ecology, and restoration science.

The successful candidate will develop spatially explicit forecasts of how rural depopulation, climate change, land-use change, and alternative rewilding pathways may affect plant diversity, community change, ecosystem structure, productivity, carbon storage, nutrient cycling, and ecological resilience across Europe. The work combines ecological, demographic, environmental, and remote-sensing data, and includes scenario-based modelling to 2100 and, where relevant, 2300.

Key tasks include assembling and harmonising large biodiversity and environmental datasets; developing or integrating species distribution models, joint/hierarchical community models, and/or dynamic vegetation models; quantifying uncertainty; analysing functional traits and ecosystem functioning; comparing trophic rewilding and passive-management trajectories; and producing reproducible geospatial workflows, scenario maps, publications, and policy-oriented outputs.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a PhD or have submitted a PhD thesis before the start date in ecology, macroecology, biogeography, environmental science, geography, ecological modelling, ecoinformatics, or a closely related field. Strong quantitative skills, advanced programming in R and/or Python, experience with large spatial datasets, and excellent English are important. Experience with climate/land-use scenarios, remote sensing, and functional ecology is an advantage.

Location: Aarhus University, Department of Biology, Ny Munkegade 114, DK-8000 Aarhus C, Denmark. Some travel for project meetings is expected.

Deadline: 1 November 2026.

How to apply: Use the Aarhus University vacancy link provided in the post. For questions, contact Associate Professor Alejandro Ordonez at [email protected].

What's required

Applicants must hold a PhD or have submitted a PhD thesis before the starting date in ecology, macroecology, biogeography, environmental science, geography, ecological modelling, ecoinformatics, or a closely related field. Strong quantitative and spatial ecological modelling skills are preferred, along with experience in species distribution models, joint/hierarchical community models, dynamic vegetation models, or related biodiversity forecasting approaches. Advanced programming in R and/or Python, reproducible workflows, handling large geospatial/biodiversity/remote-sensing datasets, knowledge of climate and land-use scenarios (SSP/RCP), uncertainty analysis, and experience with plant community composition, functional traits, functional diversity, ecosystem functioning, or ecological stability are desirable. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.

How to apply

Apply through the Aarhus University vacancy page linked in the post. Submit the application by 1 November 2026 and direct questions to Alejandro Ordonez by email if needed.
