About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher (M/F): Functionalization of Magnetic Nanoparticles by Plasma Polymerization

This postdoctoral opening is hosted by CNRS at the Institut de Science des Matériaux de Mulhouse (IS2M), in Mulhouse, France. The project sits at the interface of chemistry, physics, materials science, surface chemistry, plasma science, and nanomaterials.

The researcher will develop and optimize plasma-based functionalization processes for ferrimagnetic nanoparticles. Core tasks include studying plasma polymerization kinetics on model substrates, identifying growth regimes, characterizing coatings chemically/physically/mechanically, functionalizing nanoparticles of different sizes and morphologies, optimizing surface properties, and scaling the process to about 10 g of nanoparticles. The role also includes preparing scientific reports and contributing to publications and presentations.

The successful candidate will join the Plasma Polymerization and Coatings team under the supervision of Dr. Aissam Airoudj and Prof. Vincent Roucoules. The work is embedded in the MAGNIFIC project and involves collaboration with specialists in magnetic nanoparticles, water remediation, and CO₂ capture.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD or equivalent in plasma physics and chemistry, materials science, surface science, polymer chemistry, or a closely related field; experience with low-pressure plasma processes, plasma polymerization, thin-film deposition, surface functionalization, or materials characterization is highly valued; experience with magnetic nanoparticles and techniques such as XPS, FTIR, AFM, ellipsometry, or TEM is an asset. Strong experimental, analytical, teamwork, and scientific writing skills are expected, with English communication required and basic French listed.

Funding and conditions: temporary full-time contract, 35 hours per week. The post is not funded by an EU research framework programme. Benefits include mobility allowance, transport and supplementary health insurance contributions, access to university dining facilities, continuing professional development, and complementary health insurance.

Deadline: 9 October 2026, 23:59 UTC. Apply via the CNRS vacancy page or the Euraxess listing.
