About this position
IMDEA Energy is offering a postdoctoral researcher position within the Electrochemical Processes Unit to join the regional MADBAT-CM consortium. The project focuses on high-throughput electrochemical characterization and interphase design for Si/graphite Li-ion batteries, with emphasis on battery-grade electrolyte formulation, electrode–electrolyte interphases (SEI/CEI), and advanced screening and validation methods.
The successful candidate will work on polymer-based redox cathodes paired with graphite/Si–graphite anodes. The research includes electrolyte formulation and screening, quantitative interphase analysis, and validation in coin and pouch-cell prototypes. A major part of the role is the use of Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (SECM) and Scanning Droplet Cell (SDC) methodologies for rapid evaluation of electrolyte–cathode compatibility and reaction kinetics.
Responsibilities include installing and operating the high-throughput SDC system, developing standard operating procedures and data-analysis pipelines, quantifying SEI/CEI evolution using CV, GCD, EIS, GITT and dQ/dV analysis, contributing to operando/in situ characterization such as FTIR, XRD and Raman spectroscopy, fabricating electrodes and assembling half-cells and full cells, and extracting transport and kinetic parameters for cell-scale models. The researcher will also participate in meetings, publish results, support proposal writing, and contribute to mentoring and co-supervision of junior researchers.
Eligibility highlights: PhD or equivalent in Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Electrochemistry, or a related area; strong hands-on expertise in battery electrochemistry, data analysis, and high-throughput workflows; experience with European projects and scientific writing; and good English communication skills.
Funding and contract: Salary is listed at 40,000€–44,000€ per year, depending on qualification and expertise. The contract runs until 31 December 2028 and includes Spanish public health and social security benefits.
Application deadline: 7 October 2026.
