About this position
Université de Strasbourg is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in Law, Political Science or Sociology for the ReligiS Project, a major interdisciplinary research initiative on religions and societies facing contemporary challenges. The position is a 1-year, full-time postdoctoral contract based in Strasbourg, France, within a large consortium of French academic partners coordinated by Université de Strasbourg.
The postdoctoral fellow will work on the research strand “Media Coverage of Religion and Secularism”. This project studies how religion—especially Islam—and secularism are portrayed in French media since the late 1980s. It combines media analysis, interviews with journalists, and network analysis to understand how journalistic practices, editorial policies, and legal frameworks shape coverage across print, broadcast, and audiovisual channels.
Main tasks include compiling and analyzing a press corpus using Europresse, comparing coverage in Le Monde, Le Figaro, and Libération for selected periods around 1989, 2004, and 2021, preparing and conducting semi-structured interviews with journalists, analyzing audiovisual media content, and mapping relationships between journalists, outlets, and religious institutions using Gephi. The role also includes interpreting results, preparing presentations, participating in a scientific event, and contributing to publications.
Applicants should have a PhD awarded within the last three years in information and communication sciences, sociology, political science, law, or another relevant humanities/social sciences discipline. Strong qualitative research skills are required, along with experience in media corpus analysis and interview-based research. Familiarity with Europresse, audiovisual data tools, or Gephi would be an advantage.
