About this position
IMDEA Energy Institute is offering a postdoctoral researcher position in the modelling and simulation of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and other advanced nuclear technologies. The role is based in the newly established Nuclear Technology Unit and is suited to candidates with a strong background in nuclear engineering, physics, energy engineering, industrial engineering, applied mathematics, or computer science.
The successful researcher will work under the coordination of senior researchers on topics such as reactor physics and neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, multiphysics simulation, transient and safety analysis, and hybrid models and digital twins. The position offers the chance to help build new scientific and computational capabilities from the outset, while contributing to publications, projects, and national and international collaborations.
Typical tasks include developing models and simulation tools for SMRs and advanced nuclear technologies, performing calculations and analysing results, supporting model verification and validation, collaborating on advanced methodologies such as reduced-order models and scientific AI, participating in R&D projects and technical meetings, preparing scientific publications and conference contributions, and helping with new research proposals.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD is required; the call is aimed at an early postdoctoral profile with an indicative maximum of four years of research experience after the PhD. Applicants should have experience in modelling, computational simulation, scientific programming, or analysis of physical or energy systems. Additional strengths include knowledge of reactor physics, neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, nuclear safety, SMR technologies, and programming in Python, C/C++, Fortran, Julia, or MATLAB.
Funding and conditions: the contract is paid, with a salary between 40,000€ and 44,000€ per year depending on qualification and expertise. The contract includes benefits under the Spanish Public Health and Social Security System.
Location: IMDEA Energía, Móstoles, Madrid.
Deadline: 24 September 2026.
How to apply: use the application form on the job page and upload the requested documents: PhD certificate, relevant scientific publications, and motivation letter.
