About this position

KU Leuven is advertising a postdoctoral researcher position in multimodal AI for breast radiology and digital pathology within the Laboratory for Translational Cell and Tissue Research, embedded in the Department of Imaging and Pathology and closely affiliated with University Hospitals Leuven.

The project sits at the intersection of medical imaging, cancer biology, digital pathology, and artificial intelligence. The successful candidate will work on foundation models for breast radiology (including mammography, MRI, and ultrasound), develop lesion-, image-, and patient-level representations, and integrate radiology embeddings with digital pathology features for diagnosis, staging, prognosis, relapse prediction, and treatment-response modelling.

The role includes rigorous validation across sites, uncertainty estimation, model calibration, subgroup analyses, reproducible software development, and collaboration with an international consortium (M4GIC-ILC). The environment offers access to clinically annotated human tissue samples, medical images, biobanking, histopathology, radiology, and quantitative image analysis infrastructure.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in computer science, AI, biomedical engineering, medical imaging, bioinformatics, statistics, or a closely related field; strong Python and machine learning/deep learning skills; proven radiology image analysis experience; and excellent English communication. Experience with DICOM, breast imaging, digital pathology, multimodal learning, 3D computer vision, self-supervised learning, foundation models, calibration, or HPC is advantageous.

Funding: full-time postdoctoral appointment for three years, with an initial one-year probationary period. Salary and appointment follow KU Leuven regulations.

Supervision: Prof. Giuseppe Floris, with co-supervision by Prof. Asier Antoranz Martinez.

Deadline: 25 September 2026, 23:59 CET.

How to apply: submit your application through the KU Leuven online application tool. For more information, contact [email protected] or [email protected].

Funding details

Full-time postdoctoral position for three years with an initial probationary period of one year. Remuneration follows KU Leuven regulations. No stipend amount is stated.

What's required

Applicants must hold a PhD in computer science, artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, medical imaging, bioinformatics, statistics, or a closely related computational field. Strong programming skills, preferably in Python, and substantial experience with machine learning or deep learning for medical images are required. Proven research experience in radiology image analysis is required, with experience in DICOM and breast imaging modalities such as mammography, ultrasound, or MRI strongly preferred. Experience with digital pathology, multimodal learning, 3D computer vision, self-supervised learning, foundation models, model calibration, or high-performance computing is an advantage. Candidates should have a publication record appropriate to career stage and be able to work independently in English in an interdisciplinary team.

How to apply

Apply online via the KU Leuven application tool no later than 25 September 2026 at 23:59 CET. For questions, contact Prof. dr. Beppe Floris or Prof. dr. Asier Antoranz Martinez by email.
