About this position
Postdoctoral Researcher in Quantum Computing for Bioinformatics at the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands)
The Biosystems Data Analysis (BDA) group at the University of Amsterdam is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to develop and rigorously benchmark quantum-computing approaches for high-impact problems in bioinformatics. This position sits within the Faculty of Science’s new Quantum Simulation for Molecular and Material Design (Q-MMD) programme and connects with the wider Amsterdam quantum ecosystem, including QuSoft and partners such as SURF.
The project is highly interdisciplinary and welcomes candidates with expertise in quantum computing who want to move into bioinformatics and computational biology, or vice versa. Research directions include:
- protein structure-based enzyme specificity and biocatalysis, including pose search, catalytic-pocket optimisation, ligand-binding sampling, and scoring enzyme-substrate interactions;
- DNA sequence analysis, including sequence alignment, assembly, distance computation, and phylogenetic inference for microbiomes and human-microbiome interactions.
You will survey and select quantum or hybrid quantum-classical methods, design reproducible proof-of-concept studies, implement prototypes, benchmark them against strong classical baselines, and evaluate accuracy, scalability, resource requirements, and scientific usefulness. The role also involves collaboration with bioinformatics researchers, the incoming Lead Scientist Quantum Applications, and colleagues across Q-MMD, plus contributions to publications, open research software, presentations, knowledge transfer, and supervision of Bachelor’s and Master’s students.
Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field such as bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, quantum information/quantum computing, computational chemistry, applied mathematics, or physics. Strong programming and reproducible research skills are required, along with fluency in English and the ability to work in an international interdisciplinary team. Experience with quantum software frameworks, HPC, open-source development, or external partners is an advantage.
The appointment is for 18 months at 38 hours per week, with a gross monthly salary of €3,706 to €5,760 plus holiday and year-end allowances. The preferred start date is as soon as possible. Applications are open until 31 October 2026.

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, quantum information/quantum computing, computational chemistry, applied mathematics, physics, or a closely related field. Strong programming and computational research skills are required, along with experience building reproducible analysis or simulation workflows. Candidates should have demonstrable expertise in either quantum computation or bioinformatics/computational biology relevant to sequence/structure analysis, molecular modelling, optimisation, or algorithms, plus the motivation to learn the complementary domain. A strong research record appropriate to career stage and fluent written and spoken English are expected; experience with quantum software frameworks, high-performance computing, open-source software development, or external collaboration is an advantage.
How to apply
Apply online via the AcademicTransfer application button. Submit a detailed CV with months for education and work experience, a publication list, and the names and email addresses of two referees in one single PDF file besides your CV. Applications are accepted until 31 October 2026.
