About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher in Social Design for Intergenerational Contact at the University of Twente (Interaction Design group, Enschede, Netherlands).

This postdoctoral opening is part of DESIGN4AGES, an international project funded by NWO through the Driving Urban Transitions Partnership. The project explores how neighbourhoods, parks, squares, and streets can be designed as everyday places for health, connection, and care across generations. The Dutch work package will be led from Enschede and connected to partners in Aalborg, Antwerp, Lisbon, and Valladolid.

The researcher will develop and test a structured methodology for intergenerational co-design of public spaces. Responsibilities include designing creative participatory methods such as storytelling, collaborative mapping, and multi-sensory design; running co-design workshops with adults aged 18–35 and 65+; coordinating a Delphi study with experts across Europe; and leading publications for academic, policy, and community audiences.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in design, social sciences, health sciences, the built environment, or a related field; strong interest in communities, equity, inclusion, and sharing power; experience with mixed methods; ability to communicate research visually and through prototyping; and fluency in Dutch and English.

Appointment: 30 months, starting February 2027. Deadline: 20 November 2026.
