About this position
Utrecht University is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher for the project “The Urban-Ocean Nexus: Towards Developing Inclusive, Resilient, and Sustainable Blue Economy in Indonesia and the Netherlands” within the Faculty of Geosciences, Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning, International Development Studies (IDS) section.
The postdoc will lead a work package on the social impacts of urban-blue frontier expansion, focusing on social inclusion, changing water-society relations, and how different social groups understand water and vegetation. The project examines the urban-ocean nexus in coastal and offshore areas of the Makassar Strait in Kalimantan, Indonesia and the North Sea off the Netherlands’ coast, linking urbanization, marine spatial planning, urban planning, and blue economy governance.
This opportunity is especially relevant for researchers in development studies, human geography, spatial planning, political ecology, anthropology, sociology, and environmental governance. The role includes field research in Indonesia and the Netherlands, organizing academic meetings and workshops, publishing in international journals, engaging in impact and policy activities, developing new research proposals, and teaching/supervising students (up to 10% of the appointment).
Applicants should have a PhD (or a scheduled PhD defense), strong publication potential, strong qualitative fieldwork skills, impact/dissemination experience, and proficiency in Indonesian and English, with a commitment to learn Dutch. Knowledge of development issues in Indonesia and the Netherlands is required.
The position is 0.8 FTE for 36 months, with a gross monthly salary of €3,706–€5,760 plus holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits. The application deadline is 31 October 2026.
To apply, use the Utrecht University vacancy page and submit a CV (including PhD date/approval date) and a motivation letter. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for mid-November 2026, and the intended start date is as soon as possible.
