About this position
The University of Oulu is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in Space Physics and Astronomy to join the Space Physics and Astronomy Research Unit at the Faculty of Science, within the Ionospheric Physics research group.
The project sits in the newly established Finnish Centre of Excellence in Space Resilience and focuses on global changes in the ionosphere-thermosphere system induced by geomagnetic storms. The successful candidate will work with first-principles global numerical simulations of the near-Earth space environment and compare simulation results with thermospheric neutral mass density variations measured by low-Earth orbit satellites such as Swarm, GRACE, and GOCE.
The research environment is strong and collaborative, with a team at University of Oulu and a wider national network involving the University of Helsinki, Aalto University, the Finnish Meteorological Institute, and the University of Turku. The group also has a broad international collaboration network. The post is suited to a researcher with experience in space physics, computational modelling, and analysis of satellite or ground-based observations.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Space Physics or a closely related field, completed before the end of the application period and obtained within the last 10 years. Strong English communication skills, the ability to conduct independent research, and good programming skills in Matlab or Python are expected. Experience with low-Earth-orbit satellite data, ground-based instruments, and numerical simulations will strengthen the application.
The position is fixed term for 3 years and starts on 01.10.2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. Salary is based on the Finnish university salary scale for teaching and research staff at demand level 5, with an estimated starting gross salary of about 3900 € per month before tax, plus a performance-related component. A 6-month trial period applies.
Applications must be submitted in English via the recruitment system by 2026-09-01. Required documents include a cover letter outlining motivation, prior knowledge, research interests, and career plans; a full CV; a publication list following Research Council of Finland guidelines; and contact details for two referees. Email applications will not be considered.
